MEET CERTIFIED BOOK EDITOR

Mechelle Martz

Science Fiction, Horror, Specialized Nonfiction

As a reader and editor, I believe that strong ideas deserve disciplined, thoughtful editing. My genres of choice have always been science fiction and horror, although I work with a variety of fiction and nonfiction writing.

I’m especially drawn to character-driven and concept-forward speculative works, where interesting ideas actually impact the world the author has built. In horror, there’s an added layer of psychological depth because the best horror doesn't just startle you, it gets under your skin and stays there, which requires careful tonal control on every single page.

I started out in professional communications and editorial work, helping academics shape their research for journals and publications. That work trained me to think carefully about structure, clarity, and logical progression. I come to editing with an inquisitive mindset, always asking questions—not just about what's on the page, but about what the story is really trying to do and who it's for. I love helping writers discover angles and possibilities they hadn't considered before.

My job as your editor is never to rewrite your voice. Instead, I seek to be an extension of your voice, helping you bring your full vision to life. I'm also a published author, so I know firsthand what it feels like to sit with a draft that isn't quite there yet, and how the right editorial guidance can change things. That dual perspective, editor and writer, is something I bring to every project.

Since I have over 20 years of experience working with academics, as well, I often also work with subject-matter experts who have deep knowledge but are still finding their footing as writers to shape their ideas into something readers can really engage with. Some of my clients are researchers who are preparing to share their findings in the form of a peer-reviewed journal, a general trade publication, or a public presentation.

My work with an author begins with a consultation so I can understand where you are in the process and what you need. From there, I set clear timeline expectations so you're never left wondering when you'll hear back from me. I track all my edits for you to review and accept, handle smaller questions in the margins, and save bigger conversations for our one-on-one sessions. The whole process is designed to feel collaborative, not stressful.

I live and work in Westminster, Colorado, where I enjoy hiking, catching live music at Red Rocks, getting crafty, and spending time with my cats over a good cup of Earl Grey. People say I've done everything, and that wide range of life experience makes me a better reader and editor. It helps me meet stories where they are.
