MEET CERTIFIED BOOK EDITOR

Sarah Fraps

Specializes in Adult and YA spec fic (sci-fi, fantasy, and subgenres); mystery; and romance

I most often work with stories that explore themes of heroism/courage/bravery, classic good versus evil, coming of age, quests, fate versus free will, magic, and friendship. I'm also interested in the intersection of different genres, like cozy mystery/fantasy, dystopia, and alternate histories. I also like to mix things up with action/adventure, thrillers, and even romance, from time-to-time.

As a book editor, I aim to help the author realize the potential of their story. So many authors come to me with a manuscript in hand and a lot of doubt. They want to publish, but they're worried their book isn't good enough. Many people imagine that editors exist to pick apart a story and find "what's wrong," but that couldn't be less true! Book editing is really about seeing the inherent value in the story while discerning what can be tweaked and enhanced to bring that story to the next level.

I see editing as a collaborative process. I work with writers who are open to constructive feedback, who want to deepen their understanding of story and writing craft, and who have a sense of their own style/voice (or who would like help finding it!). While my job is to help create consistency, clarity, and coherence within a narrative, ultimately, my job is to discern what editorial decisions will best support a writer's story.

If I’m working with a first-time author, I typically recommend a manuscript review so we can get a "lay of the land" so to speak of their manuscript. For experienced authors, we might do the same, but they tend to know what kind of editing their book needs, and have usually taken the prerequisite steps to prepare the manuscript for editing.

But the whole process is highly collaborative. I never like to keep authors guessing about what I’m up to while I work on their manuscript, so we are in regular communication, chatting about my findings or queries I have along the way.

And then keeping that relationship going after the work is complete is equally important. I ask authors to keep in touch via my newsletter, or if they don’t want to subscribe, to let me know when the book is published so I can share about it. When an author views me as a member of their publishing team, that’s a huge honor.

I'm a native Texan currently living in Houston. My husband and I have a corgi named Pippin (any LotR fans out there?). We love to travel, hike, and cook together. When I'm not editing, I like to garden despite face-melting temperatures and killer mosquitos, and I dabble in interior design. I try to read outside of work as often as I can, and I usually have a TBR pile a mile high.

If you’d like to send me a message, I have a contact page on my website, www.sarahfraps.com. Just pop your email in there, and I’ll send you some further information about my services, along with the application.
