MEET CERTIFIED BOOK EDITOR

Stacey Michael

Historical, Literary, and Speculative Fiction; Narrative Nonfiction

I work with authors whose stories are rooted in real events, time periods, or cultural research. I'm drawn to historical fiction that brings the past vividly to life, literary nonfiction that transforms research into compelling narrative, and academic writing in the humanities.

I spent the first 25 years of my working life in theatre production—first plays, then opera—and completed an MFA in Opera Directing. That experience cemented in me a deep regard and respect for story.

As a book editor, I bring a director's eye to the page. I help authors see how each scene plays out—where dialogue lands, when to move, and what emotional beat keeps readers turning pages. With the utmost care and respect, my role is to help you balance accuracy with artistry, turning carefully researched details into vivid, unforgettable stories.

I see our editor-author relationship as a bespoke partnership. This requires open communication and, hopefully, a trusting relationship between us. My primary concern is to preserve your unique voice and to tell your story in the most engaging way possible. I will fall in love with your story, just as you have, and help you make it a story you can be proud of.

I always begin every project with a manuscript review—a "30,000 feet" overview that provides clarity and a shared understanding of what your story needs. I evaluate your manuscript's strengths and areas for revision, then share my feedback in writing and in a follow-up video call. Should you decide to continue working with me, I credit the cost of the manuscript review toward the final editorial package.

From there, I typically focus on copyediting and proofreading, tailoring my approach to each manuscript's needs. For nonfiction authors, I help transform well-researched material into engaging prose, focusing on logical flow, readability, and historical accuracy.

My intent is always to be kind and straightforward and to offer friendly, constructive feedback that maintains the integrity of your story. Think of me as your "bookpilot," helping your book fly fast and far.
